What are the Pousadas

They are state owned monasteries, castles, convents, forts, manor houses that have been restored and turned into hotels, and are often set in stunning countryside.

The history

The first Regional Pousada was opened in the 40's. They are meant to be a lodging offer where visitors can appreciate the traditional regional gastronomy.

The Portuguese Pousadas have always favoured the recuperation of the national architectural heritage patrimony, guaranteeing its preservation, as well as increasingly making better an already first quality and original touristic product.

Today

Thanks to its modern network, ENATUR - the state owned company managing the Pousadas - has today more than 40 different possible destinations, where one can discover the genuine tradition and habits of the Portuguese people.

Gastronomy

The Lusitanian people have a rich historical past of which the gastronomy is an important tradition, known as the largest restaurant chain of Portugal, the Portuguese Pousadas are famous for their rich and varied gastronomy, revealing the secrets of an old art and recreating the best of the regional gastronomy together with the most genuine Portuguese wines.

Types of Pousadas

Pousadas de Portugal were classified into two basic categories Historical Pousadas and Regional Pousadas. To make it easier to distinguish between the choices of Pousadas available, we have introduced new themes to appeal to the senses and invite visitors to try out the different experiences that each one has to offer.
