Vila Viçosa is the town of so called
"white gold", the precious marble which even the Romans used
when they were here. Marble is used to decorate many buildings, along
with whitewash. It is a very clean town, as can be seen in its scrupulously clean pavements and vigorously scrubbed doorsteps, even in the case of the most humble houses. It is also a happy and green town, as is proved by the plants and flowers to be seen on every window sill and balcony. There are also many traditional craftsmen, who work in pewter and marble, making many beautiful and widely sought objects. Vila Viçosa also used to be famous for its furriers and potters. |
