The South ("Baixo") Alentejo is a more arid region, isolating the Algarve from the rest of the country by the way, but its coastline (to the South of Setúbal till Algarve) is awesome and a recent discovery for the Portuguese seeking unspoilt natural places to relax. Cities and villages like Serpa, Mértola, Alvito, Alcácer do Sal, and of course Beja were very important in the Moorish times and can be very interesting for the visitor.

Pousada Alvito Castle
With the restoration of an unusual 15th century castle in the village of Alvito, the beautiful Alvito Pousada was born. It honours the culture of the region, not only by its atmosphere, but also by its traditional cuisine and wines. What used to be the agricultural land of a medieval castle, is now a superb garden.

Pousada São Francisco
In the former 13th century Franciscan Convent located in the historical centre of Beja, we find this impressive Pousada. Combining the mystic monument with the needs of today's standards of comfort, the São Francisco Pousada, with its magnificent cuisine, allows guests to relax both the body and the mind.

Places of Interest

Almodôver
Almodôvar, is a characteristic Alentejan town with a great 18th-century Main Church exhibiting a sumptuous main altar and the equally rich Miserichord Church (18th century), with a gilded altarpiece and walls painted with decorative motifs. The 17th-century Convent of Saint Francis, although much deteriorated and abandoned, has an interesting cloister.
Alvito
its most famous monument is undoubtedly the castle, dating from the end of the 15th century and which was once the residence of the Marquis of Alvito and frequently visited by kings. Although not a defensive construction, it is imponent and striking, with a vast courtyard, circular towers and a massive keep.

Mértola
This town sits over the right bank of the Guardiana river. The town's main attraction is its castle which was built by the Moors, with a guard tower from the 13th-century.

The main church, with its sculpted facade, contains elements from the Manueline period, it occupies the site of what once was an ancient mosque.

Odemira
Enjoying a mild climate, an extensive coastline and a landscape full of contrasts, with hills or plains always exhibiting an abundant vegetation, the county of Odemira has become a popular holiday destination.
The beaches near Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the sleepy estuary where the river Mira meets the sea, are among the most famous due to the excellent conditions for water sports (namely surf) and to the beauty of the village, with its small castle which once defended the coast from pirates and its outdoor cafés, bars and restaurants, still preserving a familiar atmosphere.

Vidigueira
The small town of Vidigueira, although unpretentious, offers the visitor some monuments: the Miserichord Church, which dates from 1620, the clocktower from Vasco da Gama´s time (the famous explorer was Count of Vidigueira) and the Convent of Our Lady of Relics, founded in 1493.

Nearby, the Quinta do Carmo, an estate which once belonged to the Counts of Vidigueira, exhibits a fine manor-house and carefully kept gardens.
