The Pousada

Pousada de Torrão is no longer part of Pestana Pousadas as of the 31st of July 2011.

In the heart of the Alentejo region, 30 km from Alccer do Sal and over the Vale do Gaio dam, stands the beautiful Pousada of Torro. It is the perfect place for shooting, fishing nature and water sports lovers, as well as for gastronomical buffs. The sunsets on the terrace, overlooking the dam make your stay at this Pousada unforgettable.

Torro:

Located on the banks of the Barragem de Vale de Gaio reservoir some 30km/19miles southeast of Alccer do Sal, Torrão is the birthplace of Bernardim Ribeiro (c. 1482-C. 1552), famous for his poem "Saudades", published in 1554, probably posthumously. This beautiful spot is the ideal base for anyone enjoying water sports on the waters of the dam and the peace of the Alentejo plain. The area is dominated by vast plantations of cork, oak and olive groves. It is also home to many types of bird, including storks and great bustards, these beautiful birds delight in the large open areas with little population and the mixture of agricultural land and wilderness. With the proximity of the water, the area around the Pousada is especially good for the ornithologists (bird watchers).
