MAIN ATTRACTIONS
Lisbon can best be seen by strolling through the typical neighbourhoods of Alfama or Bairro Alto, hopping on board a tram, taking a boat along the river, or even by using Lisbon's underground, with its decorative stations, many of which are true works of art by well-known Portuguese artists. Apart from the vast choice of museums throughout the city, a visit to Belém - west of the city - is an absolute must, with its gardens, the Torre de Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, both classified by UNESCO as world heritage. Next door, the modern Centro Cultural de Belém, the 18th century Coach Museum and the never-to-be-forgotten local pastries, the Pastéis de Belém. East of the city, the brand new Parque das Nações (ex-Expo'98) with a variety of leisure attractions, including the Oceanarium, widely considered to be one of the best in the world.
