An attractive point to visit is the old streets of Ericeira with its typical pavement and its chapels, religious monuments with a richly decorated interior.

The tour starts at the Largo dos Navegantes and ends at the São Sebastião Chapel, where we pick up the local bus, which will take us back to the village center

Santa Marta Chapel

Walking around Santa Marta Park, the coastal promenade leads us to Santa Marta Chapel.

The primitive chapel dates from the 15th century, but was demolished in 1760 and reconstructed at the actual location.

Cultural Centre

The former Grande Casino of Ericeira existed from 1919 to 1927 and was later transformed into cinema.

It stayed in operation until the early eighties.

By then the building, already quite degradated, was acquired by the Town Hall of Mafra, reconstructed and reopened its doors as Cultural Center Jaime Lobo e Silva on the 31st of July, 1995.

The Harbor Wall

The imposing harbor wall semicircles the Fishermen Beach. Overlooking the sea, the building of the harbor master in its colonial style still reminds an glorious époque, when Ericeira was considered one of the most important harbors of Portugal.

Santo António Chapel

Santo António Chapel, also known as Our Lady of the Blessed Journey Chapel, already existed in 1609. A stone, placed above the main portal says the chapel was renovated in 1844.

This chapel is the center of attractions at the annual festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Blessed Journey, organized by the local fishermen.

Holy House of Mercy

The Holy House of Mercy Church, located in the old center of the village, was built in 1678. Formerly it included the hospital facilities, today home of the Holy House of Mercy museum.

Point of interest is the wooden ceiling with paintings dating from the 18th century.

The pillory of Ericeira
The pillory of Ericeira is an ancient monument in Manuelino style, dating from around 1513. After the extinction of the district of Ericeira in 1855, it was removed, but later in 1924 re-erected. It still shows the bracelets, where convicts where tied to.

The Parish Church
The Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Peter, already existed in the 15th century. In 1658, the former small chapel was transformed into its actual dimensions. Most of its silver decoration was lost, when Napoleon applied a tax in 1808 to the Portuguese kingdom.

Path over the cliffs
This picturesque path , overlooking the north beach, leads towards São Sebastião Chapel.

São Sebastião Chapel
São Sebastião Chapel, located at the north end of Ericeira dates from the 17th century. It is famous for its unusual architecture. A hexagonal ground plan and round dome remember Arabian buildings.
The tour ends here,
North Beach and São Sebastião Beach invite for a swim or sunbathe. The local transport Turispraia offers its service to take the visitor back to the center of the village.
