Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon Coast : Costa de Lisboa, on the southwestern coast, offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The St George’s Castle and Mouraria is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa on the top of the hill. Mouraria are the likewise old quarters of Alfama. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints (St António - 12th June). Bairro Alto is also wonderfully lively at night - lots of restaurants, fado houses and late night bars/clubs. In front of Tejo river (Tagus), the visitor can’t miss Torre de Belém (Tower from the 15th century) and the Mosterio dos Jerónimos (from the 16/17th century in Manueline Style). Also, nearby the river in Alcântara there are plenty of fashion restaurants and bars in a place called Docas.
Estoril Coast: starts in Carcavelos, 15 km from Lisbon, and stretches as far as Guincho. Beaches on the Estoril Coast face south in a continuous line from the Tagus estuary and are known for their calm waters and fine sand. All modern facilities are available - changing rooms, beach tents, shades, restaurants, bars, etc.
Cascais: Little town beaches (Praia da Rainha, Praia da Conceição) with charming surroundings and yachts bobbing on the water. The Praia da Ribeira is a picturesque spot and still a traditional fishing harbour. The beaches of Cascais have names like the "Pescadores", "Marchioness" and the "Queen", reminding us of the time when it was the "Land of Kings and fishermen". Portuguese kings and many exiled kings have lived in Cascais over the years. Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman's beach).
Guincho Beach: 5 km from Cascais, lying at the foot of the Sintra hills and facing the Atlantic, should not be missed. Guincho has always been ideal for surfing owing to the large breakers, but it is now becoming increasingly known for wind surfing.
Sintra: A day in Sintra, once the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy, is an absolute must when visiting the area. This world heritage site, with its outstanding palaces, museums and gardens, is set amid lush wooded hills with views stretching as far as the eye can see. The coolness of its altitude in summer makes a welcome contrast to the beach.
Cabo da Roca: The headland of Cabo da Roca lies at the end of the Serra de Sintra, where the hills flatten out to meet the sea. Wild and rugged, with spectacular views down the coast, it is the most western point of Continental Europe situated at latitude of 38° 47’ north and a longitude of 09 30’ west. There is little to see, except the lighthouse with the words of Luís de Camões, Portugal’s national poet, but it is well worth a trip nevertheless. You can even get a certificate from the tourist office proving that you’ve stood this far west!
Golf Courses: In the area around the village of Murches there are many fabulous golf courses, all within a 15 minute drive from the house. So whether you are a complete beginner, want to brush up on your strokes or are a real pro, there is something for everyone. The main courses are listed below.
